Donkey Cart Ambulance

AMURT and AMURTEL have trained thirty-six midwives in the remote villages of Burkina Faso. The midwives provide prenatal consultations and safe births, and educate women on issues such as sexually transmitted diseases, family planning and the fight against female genital mutilation. Many of the midwives are becoming leaders in their community, providing a source of hope to their peers in an otherwise male-dominated society. The gift of a donkey cart will help a midwife transport women with birth complications to the nearest government clinic, potentially saving lives. Learn more about this program.

Donkey ambulance
In remote northern Burkina Faso, where the only available means of transportation are bicycles, donkeys and camels, a donkey cart ambulance is the best way to transport a women with birth complications to the nearest health post. The midwives have requested these carts to make their interventions more effective.

"Thanks to the activities of the village midwives we are aware of the importance of check-ups for pregnant women and babies. Our women and children are now in better health. "

Bringing healthcare to the village

In 2007 AMURT and AMURTEL launched the Kekeli Movement in Mafi Zongo, one of the four areas in Ghana where we support community-managed health programs. Kekeli means "brightness", symbolizing the light of knowledge that the thirty-two Kekeli health promoters bring to the rural communities. The Kekeli women are trained in health hygiene, sanitation, disease prevention and women's health. They have asked for more blood pressure cuffs and stethoscopes to better monitor the health of their fellow villagers. They also require bicycles for home visits, and to attend local churches where they give talks on healthcare.

In addition, AMURTEL is supporting the traditional birth attendants through advanced training and the supply of delivery kits. By investing in these village midwives we are providing them with the tools to save more lives. Learn more about this program.

Sponsorships for HIV/AIDS Children

Across four provinces in Kenya, AMURT supports the care of 3,000 orphans and vulnerable children either affected by or infected with HIV. We provide medical treatment, education on child rights, counseling guidance, nutritional support and many opportunities for making new friends. Necessary school supplies and uniforms ensure that the children go to school. With many more children asking for help, we need to expand this program.

Home-Based Care for HIV/AIDS Patients

AMURT provided home based care to 1187 people living with AIDS across Kenya in 2010. We helped them adhere to their medicine; resume an active life either by returning to employment, or joining a savings and loan group; and overcome the stigma of the disease. We worked with their friends and relatives to foster more acceptance of the disease, and reduce their pain of social isolation. Our community health workers need bicycles to visit remote locations, and care kits for their clients that include multivitamins, skin cream, soap, first aid items and toilet paper. Milk for mothers with HIV/AIDS

Almost 50% of mothers infected with HIV pass the virus to their children while breastfeeding. Many women are too poor to afford cow's milk or infant formula and have to gamble with their own milk. AMURT protects children in the Nairobi slums by educating mothers about HIV and providing them with milk for their babies.

TANZANIA/UGANDA

AMURT educates 400 kindergarten and primary-level children in two rural schools in Tanzania and Uganda. Our syllabus is designed to provide a balanced education that includes gardening and art classes, along with the basic courses. In these areas, most families live in poverty, and without sponsors these children would not be able to attend school. Learn more about this program.

Saving the Lives of Mothers and Babies

AMURT provides maternal health services to rural communities in Ebonyi State to help reduce Nigeria's maternal mortality rate, the second highest in the world. The program trains skilled birth attendants in safe delivery methods for both normal and complicated births. AMURT also organizes home visits to every woman as well as outreach educational programs, encouraging wo men to start delivering with the skilled birth attendants in the new clinics we support. Already in 2011 there have been 180 births in the three clinics with ten critical births ending favorably for mother and baby. AMURT requires more teaching materials such as midwifery manuals and life-sized models of full term fetus, placenta and female pelvis to improve the skills of the midwives serving in our clinics.
